Psychotropic
Psychotropic drug includes any drug capable of affecting the mind, emotions, and behavior. They are often prescribed to individuals with intellectual disabilities to help with challenging behavior if non-medication approach has failed. However, this should not happen (See our module to learn more) and if prescribed, these medicine can only be prescribed for short term. All psychotropic medicines should be reviewed regularly.

Here you will find information on variety of psychotropic (psychiatric) medicines in an accessible format. These leaflets were created for people with intellectual disabilities. However, it can be used by anyone.
You can use this to learn more about the medicine and share this with the person you support so he or she can also learn more about the medicine they are taking as well.

A support (care) staff or a member of family must go through the leaflet with the person with intellectual disability to explain symptoms and other important information.
Please take this leaflet to any appointments related to your medicine such as medicine reviews.
You can save them in your computer to read later or print off the leaflet if needed.
