SPECTROM PDP

Logo.png

SPECTROM PDP is a scoping project that directly relates to The Short-term Psycho-Education for Carers To Reduce Over Medication of people with intellectual disabilities (SPECTROM) training. Please visit the SPECTROM website (https://spectrom.wixsite.com/project) for more information on SPECTROM training.

The aims of the SPECTROM PDP are to a) assess the need for SPECTROM training and its acceptance by service provider organisations and direct care (support) staff that support people with learning disabilities, b) whether SPECTROM can be implemented by including it within organisations’ existing programme, and c) gather data to help with a sample size calculation for a future study where we will assess SPECTROM’s clinical and cost-effectiveness.

It has been funded by National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) Programme Development Grants: NIHR204577.

SPECTROM was developed by:

SPECTROM PDP WORK PCKAGES

WP 1: Initial Workshop

Workshop involving 30-40 stakeholders (direct care staff, service managers and Positive Behaviour Support lead) from 15-20 service provider organisations to find out the desire to take part in SPECTROM training and its implementation including a future RCT to assess the scalability of SPECTROM.

WP 2: Randomisation

Randomise eight community homes in 1:1 ratio through different service provider organisations from different parts of the country. Service managers in four homes to receive SPECTROM training from the research team.

WP 3: Follow up data collection

Follow up over six months to collect medication data anonymously from all eight homes. Assess pre-, and post-training staff knowledge of psychotropic medication and attitude toward using medication to address BtC, and how embedded the practice of using SPECTROM is in the day-to-day care of people they support.

WP 4: Mixed-methods process evaluation

A mixed-methods process evaluation involving focus groups of staff (direct care staff and service managers) and interviews with individuals with intellectual/learning disabilities and their families or independent advocates, and questionnaires.

WP 5: 2nd stakeholders’ workshop

2nd workshop including service user organisations and wider stakeholders.

SPECTROM PDP project is currently RECRUITING.

If you are a service organisation that supports people with intellectual/learning disabilities and want more information or want to participate and receive free training which will help facilitate the implementation of the NHSE STOMP STAMP initiative, then get in touch below or alternatively, please email us.

What happens if I participate?

We need service provider organsiations to identify support staff and service managers who can take part in the project from different community homes.

We will then randomise community homes into either the SPECTROM arm (Where staff are provided SPECTROM training) or the control (No SPECTROM training is provided during the duration of the study).

Data will be collected from staff before and after the training (after training at 2 weeks, 6 months and 12 months). We will also carry out process evaluation to understand staff's and adults with intellectual/learning disabilities' experiences of SPECTROM project.

What is expected of my staff?

To reduce the load on service managers, the research team or PBS trainer will train service managers and direct support staff on SPECTROM. Service managers are asked to ensure SPECTROM is implemented in the community home and monitor the use of SPECTORM resources if the community home is randomised to the SPECTROM arm.

Checklist

The staff from the community homes randomised to SPECTROM arm are expected to attend a two day training during work hours and the direct support staff are encouraged to explore the online modules, internal and external resources available on SPECTROM website where possible.
